Web Rankings Tanking? No Blogging = No Traffic, by Bay Area Inbound

Posted by Laurie Monahan on Thu, May 24, 2012 @ 11:00 AM

Recently picked up two tech marketing consulting gigs...one is blogging for a large well-established tech company and the other is marketing for a high-tech startup so I'm the whole marketing show.

I really like both gigs because one keeps me abreast of marketing best practices in well-established-well-funded company, and the other one lets me be the big fish in the little pond. The best part about that is you get great diversity in types of work which keeps the skills up and the mind happy.

And yeah, I kind of like being in the driver's seat to see how quickly we can get this product on the maps and out the door, and to tell you the truth, I couldn't be more excited because both gigs can be done from home which is ideal for a Mom.

But the downside, if there is a downside, is I've let my own blogging drop down to zero for two months which has made my own web traffic drop at a steady decline. Not as much as it would have if I were paying per click (PPC). When you stop paying you stop having traffic with PPC. And to be honest, I'm actually kind of amazed that I'm still all over the top of a google search when I google my target keywords like: "Bay Area Inbound Marketing Consultants", "Inbound Marketing in SF" and "Inbound Marketing in Bay Area."

So I'm just checking in to let you know that, yes, I did increase my traffic month-over-month by ~400% by blogging steadily for 3 months. And yes, traffic did drop at about the same rate when I stopped blogging and publishing via social media. Two months ago I was getting approximately 1,300 visits a month, and now I'm getting approximately 275. But after I knock out 6 blog articles this week, I'll drive my visits back up through posting on social media.

Another important note, actually a much more important note, is that I did get both jobs as a direct result of my online marketing. Which is the whole point for any of us. To get the word out there about what we do, establish online authority with search engines through rankings, drive traffic to our site, convince readers through our content that we have credibility so they will buy our services or products.

Have you had similiar experiences? Do you want some pointers on driving website traffic for your company?
